Here's another CD from those nice people at Jasmine Records who have been responsible for some great releases over the past few years from early Hammond organ pioneers such as Lenny Dee, Ethel Smith, Jackie Davis, Milt Buckner and Ken Griffin (all still available from us). The obvious omission from that list is rectified here with the late, great, Buddy Cole.
While he was at home on both theatre and Hammond organs, this set is made up of… as the title would kind of imply… four complete Hammond LPs from the early days of stereo in the late fifties. The double CD set contains a total of forty-eight tracks with all twelve tracks from each of the LPs; “Have Organ Will Swing" from 1958, “Powerhouse" and “Hot & Cole" from 1959 and “Swing Fever" from 1960. All the tracks feature the Hammond with guitar, bass and drums etc.
There are too many tracks to pick out all the highlights, but some of the very best include “That Old Black Magic", “I Hear Music", “Heat Wave", “The Lady is a Tramp", “Georgia on My Mind", “Just You, Just Me", “Christopher Columbus", “Tuxedo Junction", “Opus One" and “Jersey Bounce".
As with all the previous Jasmine releases, the sound quality is excellent, as is the packaging (with sleeve notes by Alan Ashton). At £8.95, the price is also extremely good value for nearly two and a quarter hours worth of music.
Buddy Cole died far too young, aged just 47 in 1964, but if you want to know what a Hammond should sound like and how it should be played, then I can't think of many better releases that would give you the idea.
